The world's most outstanding aluminium-rolling processes, using the fine control system, have been developed through our research that encompasses foil stock, lubricants, a thickness and flatness measuring system, and control techniques. These enable us to meet the needs of many different applications of foil. In addition, our activities include the development of flatness control techniques for the high-speed rolling process; the study of annealing and the metallurgical investigation of impurities; surface oxide films; and pinhole detection facilities for use on the production line. The result of these ceaseless efforts is that our foils have beautiful, glossy surfaces and very few pinholes, making them optimally suited for multicolor printing. For this reason, they are much in demand as packaging materials for foods, drugs, cigarettes and other products, as well as for decorative applications and for use in a wide variety of consumer products.
By pursuing the development of packaging materials made by laminating plastic films, we have taken advantage of aluminium's non-magnetic and electrically conductive properties to broaden the industrial applications of aluminium foil, developing products as diverse as materials designed to shield against electromagnetic waves, circuit elements for use in electrically heated carpets and merchandise security tags.
We are also engaged in the development of high-performance materials; we have been especially successful in developing aluminium foils. We ship high-purity aluminium foils and aluminium alloy foils to both Japanese and overseas markets for use in a wide variety of electrolytic capacitors.

Aluminium foil as a resource-saving and energy-saving material

Aluminium foil is made of a lightweight material, aluminium, by rolling it to an extremely thin thickness (average thickness of wrapping foils: approximately 7µ), and possesses various excellent physical and chemical properties including barrier properties to block light, gas and moisture.
Moisture prevention properties, scent retention properties, heat conducting properties
Electrical conducting properties, heat-insulating properties
Light blocking properties, hygienic properties
Good appearance, workability

If materials other than aluminium foil were used, the necessity would arise for larger amounts of paper or plastics, and glass or metals of greater thicknesses in order to provide products with the same functions and performance as would be obtained if aluminium foil was used.
Serving a huge function with tiny amounts of materials, aluminium foils contribute to the effective utilization of resources and the saving of energy in the overall process from manufacturing to transportation.

For example, let us compare the transport efficiency between paper cartons with bonded aluminium foil and glass bottle containers. It has been reported that the former requires only 1/26th of the fuel required by the latter for transportation. In cases where the contents of containers need to be transported cold or frozen, the use of aluminium foil allows for transportation at normal temperatures, resulting in further energy-saving effects.

Applications

With excellent properties including high surface glossiness, few pinholes and suitability for color printing, the aluminium foils manufactured by Toyo Aluminium are employed in a wide range of applications including wrapping materials for foods and drugs, for ornamental purposes and for daily uses.
