Development

Objective of development was the creation of high-output capacitors for EVs and collectors for batteries

Toyal Carbo ® is a composite material designed for electrodes developed by bonding carbon particles to the surface of aluminium foil without the use of binders by employing Toyo Aluminium's unique whisker production technology. This material is to be employed for electrode materials requiring high capacity and low resistance.

Outline

Aluminium has traditionally been used for capacitor and secondary lithium ion battery electrode collectors because of its advantages in terms of corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, workability, light weight, and low cost. Expectations for this electrode material which possesses high capacity and low resistance are high with regard to the realization of capacitors and secondary lithium ion batteries for EVs and HEVs requiring particularly high outputs.

Features

When aluminium foil is used for collectors for battery electrodes and capacitors, the formation of oxide films is indispensable in improving the corrosion resistance of electrode plates. However, oxide films possess the disadvantage of blocking the flow of electric currents. In order to improve electrical conductivity, it is general practice to attach carbon to electrode plates using binders (a type of adhesive). However, binders not only increase the resistance of electrode plates but also may pose a problem in operation in high temperature ranges. On Toyal Carbo ®, whiskers instead of binders are used to bond carbon to aluminium foil. As a result, this material achieves low resistance characteristics in all environments.
